United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) held its annual meeting at the Indiana Roof Ballroom today and recapped its year of community impact, strategic partnerships and new initiatives in front of a crowd of almost 900 enthusiastic supporters.

“This year, United Way of Central Indiana led an intentional effort to create a community where all children are prepared to succeed in school, all families are financially stable, and all in our community are leading safe and healthy lives,” said Ann D. Murtlow, president and CEO of UWCI. “We are pleased with our progress, and thanks to a strong network of individuals, companies, foundations and strategic partners, we are uniquely positioned for even greater impact for years to come.”

Murtlow and board chair Steve Walker reviewed highlights of UWCI’s year of impact, which include:

  • a new strategic partnership between UWCI, United Way Worldwide and Eli Lilly and Company, designed to take Lilly’s company giving, volunteering and advocating to a global scale;

  • the achievement of the Indianapolis Preschool Scholarship Program (IPSP) and On My Way Pre-K, which served approximately 1,500 children from low-income families;

  • the successful completion of Sunnyside Elementary’s Student Success Grant, one of five grants awarded to underperforming schools, which resulted in dramatically improved math and reading scores;

  • the expansion of UWCI supported Center for Working Families network – now 10 sites (8 neighborhood centers, Ivy Tech and Goodwill Industries) where low-income families can access a full range of services to lift them out of poverty;

  • and the addition of the Mental Health Court as part of UWCI’s Basic Needs strategy, which was given provisional certification this year as part of the Marion County Court System.

“I’ve been extremely proud to lead United Way of Central Indiana for the past two years,” said Walker. “While our community supported United Way’s $60-million-dollar investment in focused initiatives and organizations, I know the value of that resource is ten, twenty, maybe even a hundred times greater on the lives of the people in our community.”

Walker honored David Ricks, Eli Lilly and Company, for his service as the 2015 Community Engagement Chair and then passed the gavel to incoming board chair, Connie Bond Stuart, regional president, PNC Bank. Stuart announced next year’s Community Engagement co-chairs, Rafael Sanchez, WRTV 6, and Rafael Sanchez, President, IPL.
