United Way receives $10 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to replenish Capital Projects Fund serving partner agencies
INDIANAPOLIS – United Way of Central Indiana will continue to provide capital projects support to local nonprofit agencies thanks to a $10 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. The Capital Projects Fund supports the construction and renovation needs of human service organizations in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion and Morgan counties.
“United Way’s partner agencies are doing such critical work in this region to help improve the lives of our residents and create more self-sufficient individuals and families,” said Ann D. Murtlow, president and CEO of United Way of Central Indiana. “Over the years, Lilly Endowment’s generous support for the Capital Projects Fund has magnified the agencies’ impact on those they serve.”
The Capital Projects Fund recently approved projects that are:
enabling Sycamore Rehabilitation Services to acquire and renovate a new facility to meet the growing demand for services to adults with disabilities in Hendricks County
assisting the Marion County Commission on Youth (MCCOY) in relocating its offices so it can expand training programs for youth service workers
helping the John H. Boner Community Center renovate current space and acquire new space so it can launch a career center for adults
Lilly Endowment has supported United Way’s Capital Projects Fund since December 2000 with grants totaling $147.5 million. The fund has enabled United Way to invest in 146 projects for 73 agencies. For every $1 that United Way invests in projects, the fund helps generate another $2 in broader community support for a total impact of more than $350 million in renovations, new construction and purchases.
The Capital Projects Fund is administered by a committee of dedicated local volunteers with expertise in architecture, engineering, finance and other disciplines. The committee reviews each proposed project and makes sure that related specifications, designs and plans are solidly conceived and well thought out. The Capital Projects Fund also provides support for technical assistance so that agencies can assess the feasibility of projects before starting them.
