Free tax preparation now available for households with income of $66,000 or less in 2024

A program that provides free tax preparation services is now open for the season.

Indy Free Tax Prep is available to people and families with a household income of $66,000 or less in 2024. The program will run through mid-April at 13 locations in Boone, Delaware, Hendricks, Marion and Morgan counties.

Those seeking assistance can find a list of locations and sign up for an appointment by either calling the phone number or clicking the appointment link listed under each site at indyfreetaxprep.com. Two Indianapolis sites, Amvets Post 99 and John Boner Neighborhood Centers, also accept walk-ins during certain hours on Saturdays.

United Way of Central Indiana has administered the Indy Free Tax Prep program since 2015. Over the last decade, volunteers have prepared more than 48,900 tax returns, helping people get back more than $44 million.

The program kicked off for the season on Wednesday at John Boner Neighborhood Centers in Indianapolis.

People need a trusted source to ensure their taxes are done correctly. Indy Free Tax Prep does that – while helping people save money, said Fred Payne, United Way of Central Indiana’s president and CEO.

“Anytime we can help individuals in community save money ... that’s more money they can put in their pockets, that’s more money they can reinvest in things like food, shelter or transportation,” Payne said. “This is one of the additional ways that United Way, along with its partners, helps people live the lives they’re capable of living.”

Many sites that offer the program can also connect people to additional resources, such as financial education services and health services, said Carla James, Boner Center and Marion County coordinator for Indy Free Tax Prep.

Without the program, people would face challenges finding quality tax preparation: “A lot of tax preparation services do charge a lot of money for basic tax preparation. We do ours completely free, and our volunteers are certified by the IRS every year,” said James, Boner Center’s director of basic needs and systems integration.

During last year’s Indy Free Tax Prep program, more than 130 IRS-certified volunteers prepared over 4,900 returns, helping taxpayers claim more than $4.4 million in federal refunds.

United Way partners with the IRS, corporate partners, hundreds of volunteers and dozens of community organizations across Central Indiana to provide the program.

Those with a household income of $79,000 or less who want to file online can use MyFreeTaxes.com.
